January 2009 |
The winter of 2008/09 has been productive and fun – lots of artwork, some cold temperatures, and plenty of skiing and skijoring.
Two major events filled the fall and the early winter. In November, I moved into my beautiful new studio. In December, my show at the Anchorage Museum opened. The combination of the two made for a whirlwind couple of months, but the show went smoothly, looked great, and was well received.
Here is a link to an article from the Anchorage Daily News that came out shortly after the show opened: http://www.adn.com/life/arts/story/630095.html
A note on the studio: I have spent the last twelve years hauling my 700 pound Vandercook SP 15 letterpress around with me. It followed me from Lincoln, Nebraska to Montana, and then came up the highway in the back of my overloaded pickup with me to Fairbanks. I can think of at least eight times this beast has had to be moved, and the list of friends and moving companies I’ve enlisted is very long. It was with great relief (no pun intended) that we moved it for the last time. In May, the Vandercook will be joined by a large Conrad etching press. The new press will allow me to make much larger scale woodcuts, and opens up the options for making other kinds of prints.

I’ve picked up the pace again on artwork recently and I’m anticipating a very busy spring and summer. I will be working on a 1% for Art commission for the Su Valley Middle/High School, the school that serves the Talkeetna area. These large carved panels are scheduled to be installed in January. I am excited about the chance to work on a big scale again.
In June and July I will have a solo show in Fairbanks at The Alaska House. In July, a different exhibit opens at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council. And last but not least, I recently began working with the Cullom Gallery in Seattle, which specializes in Japanese prints and contemporary prints that connect to the Japanese tradition. I will be showing a new series of prints at that gallery in November.
